The truth behind Momo's poisoning - a cautionary tale

First of all I have to thank efurrbody for their purrs, prayers, well wishes and visits during my illness. Who says there are no miracles - this is one effected by the Cat Blogosphere and fellow furries and animal lovers.

My SS went around the neighbourhood yesterday afternoon to see if there were any clues that made me so ill. She had searched our garden for mushroom and spiders etc. There was nothing much there. No mushroom at all despite the recent rain and there were only a few webbing spiders. There are 3 adjoining gardens that I frequent regularly. She went and asked those neighbours and had a look at their yards. Nothing in two of them.

The third of the families is quite new and has two little children. They had pesticide treatment to their yard the day before I got sick. They had been told to keep pets away from the area for 2 days. They do not have pets themselves and did not think of telling us (yes, they know me because the children have played with me). Furthermore, the younger child had dropped his bowl of macroni cheese on the edge of the lawn that evening and called me over to eat it. I loved anything made of cheese and licked the whole thing up. The older child was there but the parents were indoors at the time and were not told about the incident.

So presumably that's how I was poisoned. SS will tell the vet tomorrow and see what he has to say about it.

Lastly I have to thank my sissy, Sassy, colleagues at the CCSI and the Zoolatry for make the following graphics for me to cheer me up on my road to recovery.

I am glad that you have tracked down as to what made you sick. If only sometimes we could talk but then again the humans already have little ones for that, they are called children. I am so sorry that you had that bad poison but feel better knowing that it was an accident. I would hate to think that someone was trying to make furries sick on purpose. Please, please try and not eat anything except what your SS or gran give you. I know it is hard. I hope your cards and photos cheered you up. It was fun making them knowing you were getting better. When you were ill the mom of the house couldn't even look at your photo without tears in her eyes. Now she has a smile on her face and I sure am happy too. Keep getting stronger each day. Oh, good news! Miral had a good day today!!!!!

Momo, sorry that you had gotten so sick from the poison in the neighbor's yard. We are glad to hear that you are feeling better!

Mum is telling me that is another reason I don't get let outside. You got enough stuff to get sick but not enough to kill you. Good that they could flush out the toxins quickly so you could get better.

Continuing purrs that you completely recover.

We are glad to see you beginning to recover, you poor dear soul. We are SO cross about your misfortune.

I hope you don't mind that I drop by even though I am not a furry kitty I saw on some of the cat blogs that you were pretty sick. I am so glad that you are home now and getting better. Please listen to what your doctors want you to do and your mom tells you also. You look like such a sweet kitty and I am so sorry that this happened to you. Get better each day.

Mommy finally got home so we could visit but she is very tired. Youngest won his robotic competition, so I guess it was worth it.

We are glad SS figured out why you got sick. It's too bad they didn't think to warn SS to keep you away. We always have to stay inside if anything gets put in our yard (The humans have a termite treatment done occasionally). ~Socks, Scylla & Charybdis

Oh Momo!! That is so scary!
It is also a reason pesticides are starting to be banned in urban areas. If it's that toxic why would those people even let their little beans play on the grass?!!!
I am so happy you were able to recover!I hope you suffer no long term effects!!!!!
Big PURRS for you!!!!!
Take it easy and make sure yo get spoiled,K? Heehee

That is very dangerous indeed! Another area to stir clear of our walnut trees, particularlly after the rain. Most people fail to think about it, but animals can get posioned from eating walnuts shells which have been lying on the ground. During the rainy season lots of the shells grow mold in them, and it is the mold, not the shell that can posion many kitties and woofies!

Dearest Momo,

I just read now of your illness. Oh how scary! I hate those pesticides, they are so scary! Your neighbors must have none that it is impossible to keep cats out of our yards. They sure weren't thinking. I hope they'll use a different method of getting rid of pests in the future.

I pray that the toxins leave your body super duper quickly. I am so grateful that your family found you in time and that the vet took good care of you.
Be well my friend!

I am so happy that you are feeling so much better and that you have found the source of the poison. I am surprised that the people let the baby bean play in the yard after putting out something that toxic. I will keep praying for you until you are completely well.

Oh Momo, how scary! We are very glad that you are feeling better and that you think you know what made you sick. Frightening that what the neighbours had done to their yard probably made you so sick! We are very glad we are indoor-only cats and don't have to worry about stuff like that.

Continuing to send healing purrs your way.

Oh dear Mom this has been such a very scarry time for you and your mommy. We were all so very worried about your illness that cam eon so sudden! It is good to know what caused it...mommy has an all natural police in our cottage garden! We love a creatures and they need to be left alone because each one of them serves it's purpose in the nature of things.
It was my complete pleasure to spend the night with you dear:)
No kitty should ever be alone when at the Vets for the night...

What a very scairty story, MoMo! It is very good of you to print what happened so other cats can be warned of this danger. I am so happy and relieved that you are on the mend.

Momo, we are so glad you are feeling better. Mom is always very careful about stuff like that and has to really watch Grampy! Nana is always wanting him to spray bug spray 'cause Nana hates all bugs. Mom keeps reminding him that we have a bug service that knows never to spray anything dangerous for us. No Raid!!!

Sadly, this is a case of where the humans only thought of their own pets, not of others, but it happens quite regularly. My Bean always check, make sure there is nothing happening on the street before I am allowed outside in the morning, otherwise I must stay in. No tenting of houses and the like.

Get well soon! Perhaps now you will become a spoiled indoor kitty!

what a horrible thing! pesticides that aren't good for animals aren't good for anyone and should be avoided! those children can't be blamed because they don't know better, but certainly their parents can for not warning your mommy! they also could have told their kids not to let you in the yard since it was dangerous.
i'm so glad you're on the mend. stay inside until you are all better and maybe only go out with your mommy from now on. take care and get lotsa extra snuggles from your mommy.

Momo, you concentrate on getting well. We know SS is taking wonderful care of you.

It's a shame those children were allowed to play in the yard at that time. Young children drop food, pick it up and put it in their mouths all the time. That child would have ended up in the human ER.

We're really glad you're recovering!!!!
What your SS found out is really scary. We can't blame human pups but .........pesticides would kill any of us. We would eat if someone offers us mac & cheese!!!!!
We'll keep praying for you and SS. Please take a good rest.

Oh Momo, that is a scary story. Stupid neighbours! I am glad you made it through this terrible experience, I just hope none of the other pets in your neighbourhood also went into that garden! My mum doesn't use chemicals in our garden either because she worries about me or other animals getting ill.

Irishcoda said...

Momo, we're all so sorry to hear you were illl and glad you're better. That's really scary that you might have picked up poison from a neighborh's yard...this is one thing that scares us about the great outdoors! Mommy won't let any of us out.

Sweet MoMo, I'm so pleased you're recovering. Those neighbours should know better than to use pesticides when not only do they have small children but also know that you visit their garden (and possibly other cats do too). Please continue to get better and I'm sending loving vibes your way:) xxx

Momo,

I've been seeing how other's have kept a vigil for you during your illness. I just now leaned about how you got sick. That is awful. They put posion on the grounds where I live and asked the tentents not to walk their pets for a few days. Some people don't see to get the word either. That was a totally dreadful epsisode you had.

I'm so sorry you had to suffer through all that and that you are better. Even though I don't know you well, I've been purring for you.

It's nice to meet you, after hearing so much about you. I didn't know you lived down under.

Hugs...Gretchen

That is so scary Momo...we don't spray our yard, but my Jonesie sister might wander into a neighbors yard and...uh oh! Hope you will be all better very soon and swat that neighbor for us, ok?

Cat with a Garden said...

Uh oh! It is so stupid to use pesticides - sorry about that! Our neighbour said to my mom once that "she has to be careful" because he was planning to spray some. I mean, what is she supposed to do? Lock me in for weeks? There is nothing a bit of muscular work can't solve. With pesticides the seeds stay in the ground anymway and will germinate again. Grrr! That made me kind of angry.
I am glad you were okay, though!!!
Purrs, Siena
